bob, I doubt it would work. The paint is created to have a sheen. Unlike a topcoat of polyurethane or some other finish, the ';shine,'; is incorporated into the paint. I think once you begin to sand it, it will only scratch and eventually begin to come off of the surface.
Might be a better idea to re-paint or paint over the current enamel paint, using a flat paint or other types, i.e., semi-gloss that don't produce the high shine.
