A contractor washed cement plaster off an enamel painted, metal roof with HCL.?

Roof has a 45 deg pitch. he then washed down the roof. from the next day we then had three days of rain. The owner says the roof must be replaced. She says that the more you add water to HCL, the more corrosive it becomes. I understand that a roof isn't a container and that adding water must (1) dilute it and (2) remove it. can someone please offer some solid scientific answer that may help here. this poor guy needs the factsA contractor washed cement plaster off an enamel painted, metal roof with HCL.?
HCl is soluble in water. Adding water to a HCl solution dilutes the acid. Add enough water and the HCl solution approaches the acidity of rain water. The HCl has been completely washed away by 3 days of rain. There certainly won't be any HCl solution left on the roof. The HCl was probably washed away by the contractor when he rinsed off the roof after cleaning it.

The owner is confused about HCl. The gas, HCl, ionizes in water and is corrosive. Exposing the roof to concentrated HCl solution is more corrosive than exposing a dry rood to HCl gas. However, the more water you add to a HCl solution, the weaker (and less corrosive) it becomes.

What are auto paints made of? Lacquer or enamel?

I'm wanting to use either to airbrush on metal. Thanks! What are auto paints made of? Lacquer or enamel?
Both Enamel %26amp; Lacquer are pretty well obsolete in automotive refinish. The modern basecoat / clearcoat system uses a few different types of resins.

Base Coat - Usually urethane based but sometimes polyester (depending on the manufacturer, BASF is polyester most others are urethane)

Clear Coat - 100% urethane

Base coat is somewhat like a lacquer in the sense that is can dry by means of solvent evaporation but it is not what most would consider a true lacquer paint. What are auto paints made of? Lacquer or enamel?
NOT ALL AUTO PAINTS are made of laquer at all man. check your facts.

not sure... we used auto paint at university.

i had a caf stool project, and i used it on metal and wood....

it sets extremely hard and is supposed to be scratch proof once glazed, there was a glaze to finish that we used like a varnish over the colour.

i used them on wood and metal projects....

i used a seal first then layers of carefully applied paint.
Above answer is completely wrong. All AUTO paints are made of laquer. If you want to airbrush metal, use auto paint. Enamel takes a bit longer to dry.
Most are enamel.

Can mirrors painted with Folk Art Enamel or Liquitex Glossies be heat set in home oven without cracking?

Why don't you use a hair dryer instead? I think an oven would do something funky to the mirror backing, plus those paint fumes are not something you need to be breathing in, know what I mean? Can mirrors painted with Folk Art Enamel or Liquitex Glossies be heat set in home oven without cracking?
Simply drying the paint is not the question. It's the prolonged heat of the oven that bonds and hardens the paint permanently. Hair dryer would not achieve same results. I'm also concerned about solvents (i.e. Windex, etc.) used in the future to clean the mirror.

I get brush marks when painting with high gloss enamel.?

I am painting crown moulding with high gloss enamel (latex). I put two coats on and it still shows the brush marks. I used a 2 inch trim brush (good quality brush). The moulding was previously painted with an eggshell latex paint. How can I get the paint to look smoother?I get brush marks when painting with high gloss enamel.?
After you've brushed the paint on, while the paint is still wet, draw the brush along the length very lightly, with the tips of the bristles barely touching the surface. Make the strokes in a long, clean line from one end to the other, and don't over-brush.I get brush marks when painting with high gloss enamel.?
Lightly sand it with a very high grit sand paper. 200 and up. Something to knock down the brush strokes then go check with a paint store. (not home depot) they can recommend a VERY good roller to leave no paint marks. What ever you use. Like a previous person said.. Don't roll with allot of pressure, enough paint on your roller so you don't have to force paint to come off to cover. But not too much so you leave blobs.. (happy medium)

Remember. The glossier the finish. The more imperfections it shows. (reflection and shadows) That's why I prefer semi gloss.
Less pressure.
Sand down what you've already painted with a fine grit garnet paper -- a 400 grit or more. Wipe down with a damp cloth and make sure it's dry. You already know that part. Thin out the the last coat or two by adding a miniscule amount of water (as it is a latex) to the paint. Experiment first on something you can toss, like scrap wood. A lot of the paints used today are thick in consistency and tend to show up the brush marks. And whatever your high quality brush is must be of natural bristles, where the ends are so fine, they leave no traces whatsoever. I myself prefer being able to see the odd brush stroke but it's not for everyone.
Another thing to try is to use the paint in the upper range of the temperature suggestions on the can. The room air and the paint should be a bit on the warm side. This will slow the drying time a bit and allow the paint to 'sit down' on the surface. Also, do not run fans or leave open windows during the painting and for at least one hour after painting, because it will speed up the drying which you don't want.

Enamel is a less durable and less glossy paint, and is most commonly used on equipment. You should use just regular acrylic paint.

If what you want is to protect your work after you are done you may use w polythene suitable for acrylics.

hope that helps.

Been There! Tried That! I had to remove what I did and use spray paint. Can I get away with painting one of these newer plastic storm doors from Home Depot with and oil base enamel?
Sure you can. It just won't stick. Look for a Krylon spray paint made for plastics.

Is it worth painting internal doors with whitewash for a long-term durable finish, rather than enamel?

This all depends on the actual finish you put on the doors..not the whitewash itself..the whitewash is the stain that is used to give it it's effect..the finish you use depends on the durability..Use a good grade marine grade varnish on them if you want them to last...do not shake varnish for it will create air bubbles in the finish..lightly stir the product..I also make sure to put some of the varnish on the bottoms and the tops of the doors too where the grain is open to seal it from moisture and warping or the venner peeling in the future...I am a 37 year experienced painter and have done many government jobs, they require the bottoms and tops being sealed as well..Is it worth painting internal doors with whitewash for a long-term durable finish, rather than enamel?
noIs it worth painting internal doors with whitewash for a long-term durable finish, rather than enamel?
No,it will chip %26amp; you can't wash very often before it starts to come off
As said already NO. Whitewash or emulsion paint has no resistance to knocks and abrasions. It is purely decorative.

Enamel is over the top for a door. Use a good gloss paint from a known manufacturer such as Dulux or Crown.

You must also use the recommended undercoat to achieve anything like a decent result.

Can I mix flat enamel & satin paints for a faux?

I have a dark red (flat enamel) for background. Have a qt. of 2 other colors in satin. Can I faux w/ them or should I get the same sheen as the background. Really don't know the pros %26amp; cons anyhow. It's for an accent wall in a basement that will have a couch %26amp; end tables in front of it. thanks. Can I mix flat enamel %26amp; satin paints for a faux?
theres no tech reason why you cant do it.

its all about the sheen. heres the deal: when you view the wall straight-on (perpendicular) it will appear differently then when viewed at an angle where the light will be reflecting. So will see the dullness of the flat mixed with the sheen of the satin. Usually, thats undesireable. I wouldnt do ti that way. I would rather have a consistent sheen.

In the end, its not a big deal (unless it is to you). If your suspect of it turning out bad, just do a sample demo (any-kind style) and let it dry and check for yourself if its gonna be cool or not.

Will turpentine remove spray paint enamel from my shoes?

I was spray painting this ladder black and didnt realize how much the wind was blowing. It got all over my shoes. I used nail polish remover, and it faded it some. And it wiped most of it off the leather. But some is still stuck around the toungue and sides, they are nike air force 1 shoes. I dont want them to be ruined because I paid 100 bucks.

All I need to do it get the paint off somehow. I bleached them, scrubbed the hell out of them with nail polish remover and it works on the leather and faded the cotton/polyester part some. Will turpentine remove this paint enamel? Im thinking about buying some turpentine tommorow and trying it out.

Turpentine does remove spray paint. I am unaware how it will affect the leather on your shoes though.

I know that it can damage vinyl from experience.

If you are using an oil or alkyd base enamel (white) it will turn yellowish after a period of time. There is no need to use that on walls. Latex wall paint is what is used. If you use a good brand like Benjamin Moore ($30 + per gallon) it will last forever. I did the interior of my house with it 15 years ago and it still looks brand new. My daughter wants to paint her bedroom in a bright white high gloss enamel...is it a mistake to say ';yes';?

Depends on what she really wants. I painted my bathroom white gloss and it looked like very sterile and glaring. Couldn't stand to turn on the lights. But, hey, white is SOOOO much better than black. At least you can cover the white.

Also make sure the wall is perfect because white gloss will show every bump %26amp; lump in the wall surface. My daughter wants to paint her bedroom in a bright white high gloss enamel...is it a mistake to say ';yes';?
Painting her room bright white might be fine, however I would recommend a satin finish paint. The high gloss is made for more high traffic areas, and the lighting combined with the molding is going to be too bright so much so that any other colors she wants to bring in will be drowned out by the white. My daughter wants to paint her bedroom in a bright white high gloss enamel...is it a mistake to say ';yes';?
Yes it is a mistake-unless you enjoy the smell of fresh paint for the next couple years. High gloss alkyd based enamels can take decades to fully dry. Latex enamels may fully dry in 3 years time. Best choice is a low VOC semi-gloss latex paint.Your health will thank you for it. Some low VOC paints are described as 'hospital paint'-for the health of the patients-and really are good in that respect. V.O.C.-( Volitle Organic Compounds.)-really bad stuff, espeacially to asmatics.
Let her....and when she hates it she can paint it another color by herself.

    Live and learn.
Yeah its fine, just don't paint the ceiling, that is SO ghetto.
Life is short. Say ';yes';! You can prime it and cover with flat or eggshell later on. Paint the ceiling too, and install some bright lights!
The high gloss will show every mark and imperfection on walls . Do not use enamel. it will show every roller mark . Its not to bad if spray it but any flaw look allot worse.

I don't care what you prime it with it will want to peel in future unless you really sand on it. I have had to redo 3 rooms in a hospital because of this. And I use a top paint /primmer brand to do them.

Stick to gloss latex and leave it at that. it will make the wall look bad even if they are finished well. They do it all time in commercial construction they want the gloss and 4 months latter we are repainting it egg shell or semi gloss.

Its your house I'm just saying been there done that and don't want it again.
HIGH GLOSS THE MOLDING PERHAPS. I WOULD PREFER A SEMI-GLOSS FOR THE MOLDING AND MATTE ON THE WALLS. IT IS YOU HOUSE NOT YOUR DAUGHTERS
nothing wrong with the white. But like the others have stated, the enamel paint on the walls will be a pain later. Use the enamel on the trims instead.

Have a look through these sites with her, she might find something she likes

    http://teensthemes.com

    http://girlsthemebedrooms.com
Yes...what does she know about ';high gloss enamel';?! It belongs on wood trim...not walls. It's your house, tell her to choose between bright white satin or flat interior paint. In exchange for that, let her pick a shiny white fabric for curtains or pillows.
I fail to see a problem with this.
you should let her ! It could be so much worse, that is she could want to paint it purple or lime green !!!
No. It's not a mistake. If you daughter wants to pain her room that color, tell her to go right on ahead and do it. It will keep pre-occupied and her out of trouble.
It is sooo wonderful that you are allowing your child to explore her creative side.. Yes let her paint her room...but don't be surprised if she changes her mind sooner then later and wants to try another color (white can be boring)
Go ahead let her.. life is short. The color is not a problem at all. The high gloss on the other hand might be down the road. You will have to primer over it later. But think of it this wasy... when I bought my house, the bathroom was in a high gloss bright pink. Took 3 coats of primer to cover. Ouch. See there is always a bright side. lol
Behr makes a water based (latex) enamel. You may want to consider steering her in that direction as oil based paints are a pain in the tooshie. My guess is she'll tire of the white unless she brings in warmth with the furniture and accessories, but so what? It's just paint.

My parents let me spread my creative wings as a kid and I'm so grateful. Now I'm a graphic designer/event planner and I love it!

Oh. If it ends up too bright for her, try changing the light bulbs to a softer light before repainting. Sometimes harsh light is a problem with white.

I'm planing on painting my car, with enamel white paint can i do graphics on this cain of paint?

Is acrylic model paint better for painting models or is enamel?

which is better for painting like a model boat..Is acrylic model paint better for painting models or is enamel?
Acrylic has a distinct advantage - the thinner and cleanup solvent is - water!

Paints that have hydrocarbon-based solvents - thinners like methyl alcohol, lacquer thinner, and turpentine - are potentially hazardous - particularly in confined spaces. For this reason alone, a water-based paint is best. Sometimes you may find the paint hard to stick on plastic. If that is the case, wash the plastic parts in warm (not hot) water with a little dish detergent. The plastic parts are molded and some manufacturers do nothing to remove the mold release chemical which makes it easier to get it out of the mold, but harder to make the paint stick.

With wood models, it usually wise to paint the wood with a sealer before painting with a water-based paint. This is to prevent warping (bending) of the wood because of the water.

    Happy modelling!

Hi, Whilst painting my tiles, tile paint splashed into my enamel bath, does anyone know how I can remove this?

depends what type of paint and how much, but if just splash specs and emulsion should wash off with soapy water and bath cleaner / cillit bang etc. Use your nail to help, or if VERY careful the tip of a stanley blade. Also used a very light scourer on certain areas - but be VERY careful if you do this as you don't want to leave scratch marks. Have done the same thing and all was ok.

GOOD LUCK!Hi, Whilst painting my tiles, tile paint splashed into my enamel bath, does anyone know how I can remove this?

the bath tub.Hi, Whilst painting my tiles, tile paint splashed into my enamel bath, does anyone know how I can remove this?
Paint something -ARTISTIC (you know this is the Arts section)- over it ?
What is the base of the tile's paint?

    let use some other words.

what is the medium of the tile's paint.?
Just wait till it's dried then use a scraper - like the type you use for wallpaper. It worked when I did it. You just have to be careful.
re paint your whole bath using enamel paint and then you wont notice it lol.

Sorry i have no idea, hope you get more serious answers then mine and manage to get it off. but if not then you could go with mine lol
Try a razor blade. Be very careful. You can sometimes get the sort that only has one blade side and a solid edge on the other. Keep it very flat and parallel to the surface. Scrape gently. Soap and water won't do anything otherwise your tile paint would eventually wear off.
To remove paint is easy so long as you do it fast...

Tile paint isn't emulsion (water based) so you can't remove with soapy water. First try methylated spirits, dab on leave to softern rub with a dry cloth and re-apply if necessary. Wear rubber gloves to protect your hands. This will work easily if the paint is fresh /24 hours or so.

If this doesn't work move on to try nitromors - use a small (cheap) brush to apply, leave for the amount of time recommended on the tin and rub off with fine wire wool. Be careful you don't want to mark the bath try on a small area to test first.

Otherwise use a window scraper (the razor blade type) and gently remove trying to avoid scratching the surface

  • Spray Paint Enamel Help?

Hello, I just bought a some primer, top coat in gloss, and a clear coat enamel, all of which are in a spray paint can.

If the top coat is gloss, is the clear coat enamel still usable or is it not needed?Spray Paint Enamel Help?
Your question seems to imply that the reason you bought the clear coat is to ADD finishing gloss - [?]. First tho, clear coat usually comes in sheen choices [satin, semi-gloss, gloss]. Is yours gloss? If you want eXtra shine, pLus protection, then go ahead and use the clear coat [as long as it's not rated satin or semi-g].

Is yours an indoor or outdoor project? If your item will be out in the direct sunlight, keep in mind that spray enamel will fade. Look at the can of clear coat and see if it offers UV protection. If yes, then the clear coat will be worth using.

If your project will remain indoors then the clear coat is really not needed. The clear coat may add some shine and some protection; but it's not ';needed'; as your Q asked. [Do follow label instructions for dry times, et al.]Spray Paint Enamel Help?

First off I would not use ( enamel ) on your guitar. I would use Acrylic Lacquer instead. Finished with an acrylic Lacquer Clear Coat. Enamel is not as hard a paint as is Lacquer. enamel won't hold up as good as a Lacquer finish will .Much harder and more durable. The choice is yours though.

Can i paint my car with oilbase enamel?

Cars are painted with lacquer or polyurethane. Can i paint my car with oilbase enamel?
Most cars today are painted with urethane and mostly two stage base/clear. Not too recently they were painted with Enamel and before that lacquer. Depends on what type of finished result you are looking for but an oil based paint will work, just not the way you are hoping forCan i paint my car with oilbase enamel?
Sure. Why? You need a heated spray both to bake the paint, and enamels are a pain in the *** to apply sometimes. Then you need to finish off the paint job to get the best look. Too much work for too little result.

Water based paints are the way to go. They are more expensive but they're easier to apply. Lots of paint suppliers sell entire kits, so all you need to do is mix and spray.

Can you use wet alum-in oxide sandpaper to take the sheen off interior enamel painted wood?

bob, I doubt it would work. The paint is created to have a sheen. Unlike a topcoat of polyurethane or some other finish, the ';shine,'; is incorporated into the paint. I think once you begin to sand it, it will only scratch and eventually begin to come off of the surface.

Might be a better idea to re-paint or paint over the current enamel paint, using a flat paint or other types, i.e., semi-gloss that don't produce the high shine.

    good luck

How to add enamel-like paint to thin wooden rods?

What type of art supplies should I use to add a glossy enamel-like laquer to the end of a smooth laquered wooden stick? It's very similar to a drumstick. Get a spray can of gloss paint.

Get a large piece of styrofoam (Hobby or craft store) and stick the dowels into the styrofoam. Spray from all angle to get full coverage. If you want the whole thing painted, give them 24 hours to set, turn them over and repeat.

  • Enamel Latex paint over oil based paint on 1926 trim!?

I have a 1926 house with original trim. Someone got the great idea to paint over it with enamel latex paint years ago. The latex is sticking very well so I assume that they did prime the oil-based and then applied the latex.

I really don't want to strip to the wood or even to the oil. I'm sure there is a lot of lead paint under there! And the cost would be out of this universe (to do it the right way).

    My questions are:

    1. Can I apply a 'quality' enamel, latex over the existing enamel latex? Or do I have to prep it before that?

    2. Is there any way to ';smooth out'; the years of gunky paint? Some type of Bondo like substance that can be sanded smooth before I apply the paint?

What is a quality brand of paint that will apply nicely and not drain my checking account ? ;)

I really want it to look nice and I need a professional's input. I am a new homebuyer and I can't afford to hire it out. What is your recommendation? Any assistance is greatly appreciated!

CraigEnamel Latex paint over oil based paint on 1926 trim!?
latex can stick to the oil base/lead base paint. If you end up doing any sort of scraping, make sure you ';wet scrape';. You are right, it probably is lead. Most houses build before 1978 were painted with lead paint. Wet scraping is where you wet down the surface before you scrape in order to keep as much dust down as possible. Lead is usually inhaled in dust form (not usually from people chewing on window sills as is commonly believed) and scraping kicks up alot of dust. So IF you scrap, make sure you do it safely.Enamel Latex paint over oil based paint on 1926 trim!?
you could use an oil based primer first, let cure until it sands easily, then use sherwin williams best (pro classic or duration) for the finish. No matter what you do it wont be a quick job. It might be easier just to replace the trim. You could also try wet/dry sandpaper, it removes paint really well, when the paper gets gummed up with paint just wash it off in a bucket of water. Patience Patience.
    Hi,

You do need to sand to make the surface smooth %26amp; priming is always recommended. I've been using Pittsburgh Pure Performance paint, covers great %26amp; has NO odor.

Can i paint rust-oleum protective enamel over kitchen cabinets that have stain on them?

Yes you can. Take a medium grit sand paper and rough up the finish a bit first to help it stick, then if you are just spraying clear coat over them, go at it. However, it is very difficult to keep it from running. I always prefer a brush on finish for cabinetry. If you were going to spray them a color, prime them first. If all you are looking for is a clear coat, it is best to apply a polyeurethane with a brush and then sand it lightly with a fine grit paper, then an ultra fine grit for a nice glossy finish. Unfortunately, there are no short cuts if you want it to look nice.

What's the difference between enamel and acrylic paints for plastic model kits?

    For models you mean?

Enamels are solvent based, acrylics are water based.

Enamel paint dries tough as nails and gives complete coverage in just one or two coats and it has a very ';solid'; finish which is why it continues to be popular with vehicle model kit builders.

Acrylics are much thinner; essentially they are slightly transparent (not fully opaque) so the coat underneath shows through a little. Acrylics are very delicate and you have to avoid touching the surface or it rubs off - a coat of varnish is needed to protect the finished model.

The big advantage of acrylics is that being so thin they do not obscure fine detail (diluted they can be taken down almost to the consistency of water) and with patience and several layers you can build up a smooth finish. Acrylic also dries fast - just a few seconds is enough.

Acrylics are the usual medium for miniatures:

Real experts often use a combination of mediums; in the case of 28mm miniatures painted in acrylics, oil paints may also be used for super-realistic looking skin. What's the difference between enamel and acrylic paints for plastic model kits?
Acrylic is water based and be cleaned up with soap and water. It often doesn't last as long, especially when painted on plastics. It doesn't seem to bond as well unless you are careful to sand the surface you're painting. It's lower in VOC emissions and is less likely to make you dizzy or sick while painting. It's less glossy too. This is a better paint for someone just beginning.

Enamel is a little more of a professional paint. It's a little harder to work with and shows your mistakes more. You need mineral spirits to clean up and it has high VOC emissions so you must work in a well ventilated area. It has a nicer look though. What's the difference between enamel and acrylic paints for plastic model kits?
Michelle H pretty well said it all...

My two-cents: enamels have been around the model-world FAR longer... I remember working with Pactra brand back in 1974 !!

The acrylics really only entered the modeling world about 10 years ago... mostly as a LESS-toxic product for parents concerned about their young-modeler. I FIRST bought some acrylics (Tamiya) while working on a kit (Tamiya's USS Missouri) while I was in Japan... the base hobby-shop wasn't carrying MY favorite brand (Testors Model Master), so I was forced to give them a try.

I'm NOT overwhelmed by their performance, but they work fine.

You painted Latex over Oil. That's why it's peeling. And you don't have to sand and sand until it's off. You can use a liquid de-glosser, or just rough up the surface a little, use a latex primer, then you can use what ever paint you want to on it. But there aint no paint, No where, No way, No How gonna stick to a slick surface. It must be de-glossed first.
You need to get an ';etching'; primer. There are a few different types, look in your local Do It Yourself store. You can either read the cans or ask an attendant for an ';etching'; primer, It adheres to anything. Remember a good paint job depends on the primer.GOOD LUCK!!
Kilz is the only thing I can think of, I've made that mistake before too....
When painting latex over oil based paint you MUST MUST MUST primer first. Use KILZ Primer and it eliminates the need to sand. The time you invest in priming will be worth it as it will prevent your latex paint from peeling off in a few days. Save yourself a little effort and when you buy your primer have it tinted the color of your latex top coat. The paint store will do this for free if you ask.
I agree with tlw733. That must be oil base paint you are trying to paint over and that Kilz is one of the best primers. I use latex Kilz and also have them tint it to the color that I am going to be painting with too. Older homes have oil base paint in them. Some people still prefer to paint with oil base. NOT me. I use latex.
Any good quality primer will do. I prefer Kilz. The whole painting process will turn out better if you spray rather than brush - if that is an option for you.

Is alkyd enamel oil paint gas resistant?

Depending on the type, Medium Alkyd enamel is rated poor to good for gas resistance. Automotive Alkyd is rated good to very good. Some of the Alkyd Acrylic or Alkyd Polyurethane blends have an excellent rating.

I would like to know the meaning of acrylic, enamel, latex and alkyd on house paint.?

Enamel is a general term that can describe any paint with a hard finish. It does not indicate what the chemical composition of the paint is, nor does it indicate the amount of gloss. Just the hardness.

Latex in paint terms generally means the paint is water based and will clean with water. Technically, the paint contains latex, which is the base material for many types of rubber. The latex in paint is usually synthetic.

Alkyd paints are synthetic oil based. Cleanup and thinning requires mineral spirits.

Acrylic is a synthetic plastic resin used in some paints. It usually results in a hard finish, so it is common to have the terms acrylic and enamel on the same paint. Acrylic is usually found in water based paints, but is also common in hybrid paints.I would like to know the meaning of acrylic, enamel, latex and alkyd on house paint.?
    It's very simple.

The next time that you're in a position to do it READ THE LABELS!!!!I would like to know the meaning of acrylic, enamel, latex and alkyd on house paint.?
enamel means the sheen, latex means water-based, alkyd means oil-based, and acrylic I believe is waterbased but with the durability of oil.

Is enamelling called 'enamel' or is 'hard gloss paint' called 'enamel'?

    The original description is:

A coating which is used on steel articles is vitreous enamel, sometimes called porcelain enamel. This enamelling, not to be confused with hard gloss paint, often called enamel, produces a smooth, shiny surface, nearly as hard as glass and difficult to scratch. Is enamelling called 'enamel' or is 'hard gloss paint' called 'enamel'?
They're both called enamel, but technically, only vitreous enamel is enamel. As the description you give says, hard glossy paint is often called ';enamel';, but that's really just a short form of saying ';paint that has a hard glossy surface that resembles enamel in appearance';. So when something is described as being enamelled, you sometimes have to check which one is really meant.

Is latex the same as enamel paint?

No, latex is rubber and enamel paint is like ceramic...Is latex the same as enamel paint?
Not even close, enamel forms a hard shell that can be washed and stand up to things like greasy kitchen dirt. Enamel is oil based and the clean up is with turpentine, gas etc but not water. Try to clean brushes with water and it will just pool on top like water on top of gas. You need some kind of solvent to clean up after painting with enamel paint.

You use different brushes for enamel and for different kinds of paints, so check the brushes when you buy them and see what kind of application they are used for.

Enamel can also be used for outdoor projects and furniture etc, it is rust resistent, and is very tough and is a good choice for doors, cabinets, furniture, indoor and outdoor, window casing etc

It is NOT a paint you want to put on an entire wall. That would really damage resale value for you or your landlord. To paint over enamel that entire surface would have to be sanded, and once you use an oil base paint on a wall you need to always use oil base paint or the paint will just lay on the surface, it could crackle on you too.

You can now buy lower gloss enamel, it used to be it was just a high gloss which restricted the things it could be used for. With the low gloss enamel it becomes a good choice for painting kitchen cabinets and furniture that will take some wear, like a coffee table. Interior doors etc.

The colours available in enamel has also grown considerably, you used to have a choice of primary colours only. Same with melamine paint but check melamine for interior and exterior use.

An alternative to enamel is melamine paint, Also forms a hard shell, good for cabinets and doors, and has a strong odor to it, and again you need a solvent of some kind for clean up.

Both have a strong smell, so you need to be able to ventilate the room you are working in by opening windows and doors. Is latex the same as enamel paint?
no not even close enamel is an oil based very high gloss paint usually put in kitchens and bathrooms for its high durability and resistance to humidity.

Latex is water based comes in different finishes but will never have the high gloss finish of enamel it can be durable but its resistance to humidity is quite a bit lower

I need to spray a small section of glass for a project.

    The medium doesnt matter.

I was thinking using tinted nail polish, which is basically enamel, but I can clean the airbrush gun easily with Acetone afterwards...any advice?

I am new to all of this.I need to paint a section of glass a clear, even color. airbrushing enamel perhaps?
If you don鈥檛 like using tint of nail polish, try to use acrylic colors

But it is forced to wash with water immediately when color is not dry. After then you can use varnish spray to cover a layer outside

You are able to clean airbrush gun with Acetone after already finishing your works.

Besides, you can use Selen or Toluel (the homologous of Benzen).

What to use to properly thin both acrylic and enamel paints for airbrushing plastic models?

I have been modeling for a long time. But up until now Ive use testors spray paints. Now Ive bought a basic airbrush and was looking for any tips for the beginner. Mainly what to use to thin the different paints. I plan on practicing on scrap before even considering a model. If anyone knows of a (free) website where I can go to help me, it would be appreciated. Thanks! What to use to properly thin both acrylic and enamel paints for airbrushing plastic models?
Acrylic paints have their own acrylic reducer and retarder.

While enamel paints has just simply a paint thinner and reducer. Both paints should not be mixed or it will give a bad result.

Is there a heat resistant paint that I can apply to cast iron covered with enamel?

You want what is called ';stove paint';. It is made for the high temperatures resulting from burning wood or coal in a cast iron stove. It is available at Lowe's or Home Depot.

There are also other heat resistant paints on the market. Rely on the advice of the paint pro at your home center.

    Firing enamel paint....?

In art class we are painting bottles with enamel paint. we want to fire the bottles, and need to know the temperature and how long to heat them for in a conventional oven.Firing enamel paint....?
If you are talking about enamel paint you just let them dry. You don't fire it. You don't need to, it will dry by itself.

You could probably speed up drying if you put them in an oven at about 100F or 120F if you are very impatient, but it's probably not worth it.

If you are talking about true enamel (colored glass) you cannot fire them in an conventional oven as they will require temperatures between 1400F to 1600F. The exact best temperature depends on the actual color. Generally you will need lower temperatures for red colors than for blue or green. But then you would be painting metal, not bottles, for the glass bottles itself would start melting...

i had this product.. if memory serves was called goof off

worked wonders at gettin paint and other simular stuff off what i didnt want it onI got enamel spray paint on my leather Coach bag. What can I use 2 remove it? HELP!!!?
I'm afraid with it being an enamel paint , anything harsh enough to remove it with remove color- think of it as if the back had a leather finish and it took a 3 on a 1-10 scale to pull some color, the enamel paint would probably take a 7-9 to remove it...your whisky color is done via dye, not finish- it takes a 1-2 to pull color.

All is not lost though- you have two options...you can try remove it ( start with naptha, if that doesnt work then some Denatured alcohol- diluted at first by adding water to an old white t-shirt wrapped around your hand first then adding the alcohol and gradually adding more alcohol as you work DONT SCRUB...and blend out so you dont just have a harshly defined light spot. You can then apply some conditioner which typically darkens your type of leather - normally not good, but in your case desirable to blend in the lighter areas.

Second option is to send it to a bag restoration firm- one of my Tech has a second business with his wife called http://www.lovinmybags.com

I am not affiliated with the firm, and offer this solely as an option to help.

    Best of luck

';Interior/Exterior High Gloss Enamel'; paint for office floor?

I have ';Interior/Exterior 100% Latex High Gloss Enamel'; paint from American Tradition. Can I use it to paint my office floor? It's wooden floor but it's already painted and I just need to paint it over with a different color. Is it resistant enough? Will it dry quickly? Is it easy to clean? Thanks a bunch in advance!';Interior/Exterior High Gloss Enamel'; paint for office floor?
Careful many times the floor paints are oil-based.Simply painting over them with latex paint will just cause chipping and peeling. Better to use an oil based primer tinted the color you want then 1-2 top coats of a quality latex floor paint.';Interior/Exterior High Gloss Enamel'; paint for office floor?
Better to use paint made for floors. It will wear better. You can use what you have but be prepared for it to wear out faster than floor paint. High gloss will be easy to clean until it gets scuffed and then it won't clean so well. Latex usually dries enough to walk on in a few hours but you should wait at least 24 hours before putting furniture back on the floor.
    Hi,

If the can doesn't mention for floors then it will wear rather quickly, also hi gloss can be slippery %26amp; show any imperfections. You're better off with a 100% acrylic floor paint.

Can you mix a latex enamel paint with latex semi-gloss paint to change the color?

I need to lighten the color of my latex enamel paint and I have some light latex semi gloss. Can you mix a latex enamel paint with latex semi-gloss paint to change the color?
    No no no.

Different paints use different chemicals to give the paint different properties. Some of these chemicals are not compatible, so you may end up with something useless. Worse yet, it may look fine in the bucket but not dry properly, or maybe peel off after it is dry.

Depending upon where you bought the paint, you may be able to take it back to them and ask them to add some KX (white) colorant to it, which will lighten it without any problems.

Having said that, if you happened to have two cans of the same kind of paint (same manufacturer, same product number), you can safely mix them to blend the color.

On another note, I feel compelled to point out that enamel can be any kind of paint -- latex, oil, or otherwise. Enamel means a paint with a hard finish. Nothing more, nothing less. Can you mix a latex enamel paint with latex semi-gloss paint to change the color?
as long as both are latex... they will mix
yeah...but it 'll be a bit less glossy thats all.
Is it latex or enamel? Latex is water based and enamel is oil based. As long as they are both water soluable you can mix them together.
I don't think that works. My mom once tried mixing two colors of yellow together, cause she had some of each, but not enough to paint our entire room. One was enamel, the other semi-gloss. Well we ended up with splotchy yellow. It kinda looked neat, like we did it on purpose. The two colors did not mix together.
I wouldn't think so. Youv'e got two different types of paint. But why don't you try a bit and see?The only thing is Enamel paint does a particular job,and is waterproof, and your semi-gloss is not.
if they are both latex then yes

Go to a paint pro shop like Sherwin Williams,Kelly Moore, or ICI paints. They can tell you the right processes and what exactly to use. I don't recommend a big franchise for properly answered questions like a Home Depot or a Lowe's. Good Luck!!!Exterior acrylic paint over enamel.?
You should be OK. The enamel paint is somewhat brittle so you have to reduce any expansion by sealing out the moisture with caulking in all needed areas.

    Good luck,

I am in Auto body at NADC, yes getting them dand blasted will do the trick. You will need to remove as much of the peeling paint as you can. This will prevent the new coat from peeling. Recoat with oil based primer or water based primer that is designed to stick to glossy surfaces then apply top coat of paint. Water based paint can go over oil based primers. To be honest with you and if you can, take the cabinets down and take them to an auto painting place. I did this with the metal cabinets in my garage. You can not beat the finish and the shine and you can choose from thousands of colors. They spray them, bake them and if you pay them a little extra would probably wet sand and wheel them. They can even put rust inhibitor on them to keep them looking new for years, not to mention fix any dents or dings. I'm telling you, if the cabinets in my house were metal, I would have had them done too!

Can you paint on your teeth with Enamel (Testors) paint?

No - paint in your mouth is toxic. Anything on your teeth can get into your gums and either start wearing them away or cause an infection. That is why you brush your teeth twice a day to get stuff off of your teeth. Never put anythingon your teeth on purpose. Would enamel paint damage my plastic airbrush?

I would like to use enamel paints when painting a model, would enamel paints eat away at the plastic in my airbrush?Would enamel paint damage my plastic airbrush?
I've never used a plastic airbrush, but I wouldn't recommend them for enamel. Most enamels are solvent based, so you'll not only be shooting the enamel through your gun, but you'll also need to use the same solvent, full strength to clean it. This will most likely cause problems with plastic.

I'd recommend getting yourself an Iwata. They have solvent proof O-rings. They're a little on the pricey side, but worth it. If a new Iwata doesn't fit you budget, try Airbrush depot. http://www.tcpglobal.com/airbrushdepot/ They sell a brand called Master Airbrush. I have a couple of these, and while they're not quite Iwata quality, they're pretty close. They're basically Iwata knockoffs. There are a bunch of companies selling these under different names, but I did a little research and they all come from the same factory in China. Airbrush Depot is the only one selling replacement parts for a reasonable price. It will take quite a while, but you'll eventually need to replace the needle guide O-ring. They claim to be solvent proof, but that's a lie.

What type of paint is best for painting wood furniture? Enamel, latex, oil base or what?

I paint furniture with oil enamel. It gives a finish which resembles porcelain

I start with a lot of sanding to make it all perfectly smooth, sanding with progressively finer grits of sand paper to take out the previous grits scratches, finishing off with 150 grit paper. Then I vacuum it thoroughly and spray on alkyd (oil) primer tinted to match the finish. Patch any imperfections with Bondo, wiping tight . It's better to have multiple coats then to have to do a lot of sanding. Bondo does not sand well, but it's very durable. Then sand the primer with 220 grit sandpaper, vacuum, wipe with a tack cloth, and spray on the alkyd enamel.

I have had the best luck with Diamond Vogel's alkyd enamel, however in a pinch I also use Sherwin Williams alkyd enamel.

Spraying gives a much smoother finish then brushing. The smoothest is with an airless paint sprayer, however they deliver so much material that they make it easier to get runs and sags in the finish. Many use HVLP (high volume low pressure) sprayers (a paint system originally created as an attachment for a vacuum cleaner) but I find that it leaves a bit too much orange peel on the surface. I would recommend using a conventional paint spray system using compressor and a cup paint sprayer.

If you have to use a brush, use a white china bristle brush. They're slightly softer then the black china bristle brushes.

Here's how I clean china bristle brushes. First I let them soak overnight, suspended in a bucket of old dirty thinner with the bristles fully submerged, but not touching the bottom of the bucket. Next (wearing solvent resistant rubber gloves) I rinse them with slightly cleaner old used thinner, using a wire brush to remove all the paint. Use a spinner to spin out the brush, and spin between each subsequent rinsing. Then I rinse with lacquer thinner, and squeeze it up into the heal of the brush to really get all the paint residue out. Paint in the heal of the brush can cause the bristles to spread and make the brush useless for fine finishes. For the final rinse I use a mixture of kerosene and mineral spirits, which puts a little bit of oil back into the bristles and keeps them softer. Then I give it one final spin, and use a brush comb and wrap the brush so that the bristles keep their shape, and suspend the brush with the bristles down to dry, so that any thinners left in the heal will be able to drain out

If you are going over an existing finish, sanding is necessary not only to make the surface smooth, but also to ensure adhesion. I often tell people ';no, you don't have to sand, but paint doesn't have to stick either.'; When you sand, you make tiny little scratches in the surface for the paint to grab hold of.

If you're painting over varnish, thin the primer with a little bit of liquid sandpaper to improve the bonding power of the alkyd primer. What type of paint is best for painting wood furniture? Enamel, latex, oil base or what?
That's the most detailed advice I found on the net, and I'm going to try it. what's the ratio for thinning when spraying with a compressor and gun with a cup?

What type of paint is best for painting wood furniture? Enamel, latex, oil base or what?
Oil-based paint is more durable, but it takes longer to dry. It is better for taking more abuse over time.

Latex paint is easier to work with and dries more quickly, but it isn't as durable as oil-based paint.

Some paints also contain enamel which makes the dried surface harder and less porous.

It depends on what the furniture is going to be used for. But not knowing that I would say a durable acrylic will do the job in most cases. But like molly r. said prime it first!
there are paints for craft project and outdoor furniture. Home Depot COLOR IN PLASTIC is a plastic enamel paint that works great for things like kitchen cabinets and would be great for furniture since it has a tough finish when cured... that would be the best bet for furniture...
Hi..... I think enamel is best, because it has a glossy easy-to-clean surface......Latex tends to shrink as it dries, and also absorbs too easily into unsealed wood.......you will want to use a primer/sealer before you apply any finish to the wood......oil based paints tend to sag and shrink as well, unless you use an airless sprayer.......if you are painting by brush, use at least two coats.......4 thin coats if you are spraying from a paint can......... :-)
There is no rule which says you must paint woodwork white, or strip it, or color it to merge with the walls. In a room whose walls, window frames and doors are in the same neutral color, you could paint the skirting board a clear contrasting color.

This will define the line between the floor and walls. Trim colors that contrast with walls and ceilings might suit your style in one room, while a more subtle color change might be right somewhere else in the house.

You can liven up plain, flat walls by adding moldings so as to create panels around the room. For best results, make sure you keep your working area within the proper temperature range recommended for the paint.

All interior woodwork that has been stripped, from baseboard to dining room tables, needs to be primed with either a standard acrylic wood primer. After that you can paint on it with oil-based flat eggshell, gloss, or acrylic paints.

Most interior woodwork looks best in an eggshell finish, as high-gloss paint can have a rather bleak, deadening effect. If your plan is to paint walls, ceiling, and trim, then it鈥檚 best to get the trim painted first, along with the room鈥檚 windows and doors. Paint woodwork in small sections. Keeping a wet edge to avoid lap marks.

A wide range of broken-color effects work well on woodwork, but ideally you should use oil-based paints as latex has little durability on wood. Stains add color to wood while allowing its natural grain pattern to show through.

Varnishes are clear finishes that form a tough coating over stain. They are available in a range of finish sheens from satin to high gloss. At the end of a project, combine all of the leftover paint of the same color into as few cans as possible.
According to my paint expert Danielle Hirsh, use a latex paint with glaze stain and then seal it with varnish.

Latex helps seal the wood and is less toxic than enamel paint.

There are many great paint options in this download check it out on HGTV.

Rustolium is the best paint to use on handrails, etc
Not an expert but I thought Enamel and Oil Based was same thing.

Enamel is the best for wood furniture, it can be sanded and recoated and only gets better looking. Latex paints tend to tear and peel and in my opinion don't cover as well as enamel.

If the wood is an open pore wood like Oak you may want to prime it or seal the grain first for a smoother finish.
Oil based paints are the best for wood as long as the wood is treated properly and primed (and filled if necessary).

The final USE of the furniture must also be considered, if you want to use the furniture outside you should use latex; if you want to wash it repeatedly, as in the kitchen, try melamine paints which are highly washable and durable.

Fine or fancy furniture is best stained and varnished, or sprayed with coloured enamels which are highly durable indoors.
no matter what paint you use you MUST prime it first.
prime it first - I've used melamine (oil based0, but I don't think it matters if you prime first
Oil based primer and paint seems best. It's got a glossy finish and it holds up to wear and tear. Do you watch hgtv ever? Seems like they're always painting something...
Ur thinking with too much class, go finger paints all the way buddy.

Can I protect acrylic lacquer paint with acrylic enamel clear coat finish?

I'm painting my motorcycle fairing using primer, duplicolor acrylic lacquer paint and duplicolor acrylic enamel top coat will that hold or do I need to use a lacquer top coat as well? Can I protect acrylic lacquer paint with acrylic enamel clear coat finish?
You would do better by using clear acrylic lacquer on the finish by keeping all the mediums the same. But, you can use enamel over top of lacquer. You can't use lacquer over top of enamel. It will wrinkle the finish of the paint.

  • How would i go around paint stripes on single stage Acrylic Enamel?

how would i go around paint stripes on single stage Acrylic Enamel auto paint? would it look odd or slightly raised from the overall paint job?How would i go around paint stripes on single stage Acrylic Enamel?
Stripes in general have a ';raised feeling'; The term pin stripes were just that raised painting above an original paint job. What is most important is not the raised quality but that the coat over the stripes matches the coat of your background color. If painting remember to mask off.How would i go around paint stripes on single stage Acrylic Enamel?
If your wanting to save the stripes, you can mask them off, then sand the rest of the vehicle. If your painting your car and wanting to paint over them, them sand them down if they are painted on, if tape use a hair dryer, heat them a little at a time and pull them off. If you spray over them without removing them then yes you will see a raised area. But you can replace with new tape stripe when your done with paint work

Marine polyurethane enamel paint and other polyurethane enamel paint?

what is the difference between marine polyurethane enamel paint and other polyurethane enamel paint?Marine polyurethane enamel paint and other polyurethane enamel paint?
There are several different types of polyurethane coatings, but the it would be incorrect to call any of them enamels. Enamels are oil based coatings. However, I think your question is what are the differences between marine and other urethane coatings........While the formulations vary slightly, for most applications, there is little difference. Good luck! Edit............Polyurethane coatings were developed for aviation use, because the weight of the coating was significantly less than than the acrylic coatings then in use.....as it turned out it was also slicker, thus reducing drag....the next step was to replace varnish in furniture, and then in coatings for the auto and marine uses...both auto and marine have good UV properties, and the solids content varies with the color and application, but the basic coatings are the same.Marine polyurethane enamel paint and other polyurethane enamel paint?
Mostly there are small differences only between marine use and other for all coatings. But the differences can be fundamental for the purpose - a marine coating has to withstand huge instant changes in surface temperature (think of a wave across a grey deck in high summer), continuous immersion, UV exposure and so on. While there may not be much technically different the small changes in formulation may greatly alter the time the finish will last. A urethane/enamel hybrid has greater plasticity than a pure urethane - better for flexible surfaces perhaps. Softer though, so scratches easier.

I don't like urethanes, poly or otherwise - too plastic and external to the surface, particularly from my extensive use of timber over the decades. They were introduced into various markets as a cheap, low skills based ';instant'; finish - I think they don't last much longer than it takes to put them on, and can completely bugger it up if applied wrong or to inappropriate applications. Very very hard to overcoat if starting to lift or crack, often requires full strip and start again for minor damage unless you like the repair highlighted. (I do use linear polyurethanes over epoxy or fibreglass, as they are much tougher than gel coat. I would expect a minimum of ten years on a correctly prepared deck, probably twice that with a little care and maintenance.)

I have a business partner and good friend who is a senior airframe technician - all types including airbus 380. He runs national airport service hangers. He makes the observation that a satin/matt finish is always used on commercial airframes as the laminar airflow is significantly slicker through the air than a high gloss, which 'grabs' the air and drags more. This is the same with performance boats. I was looking at the hull of Secret Mens Business yesterday as she streaked past us at 18 knots - yep, matt finish below the waterline.
Usually it is the ingredients added for UV protection since boats are normally exposed to intense sunlight. Coloring has moderate effects.
Marine coatings are formulated to withstand the harsh environment that goes along with boating. Marine paints have higher solids and have a stronger UV protection additive.
