Can you paint latex over oil based enamel?

Steel support poles in basement are enamel. Want to paint them with latex. Will it chip? Can you paint latex over oil based enamel?
repaint with OIL.

latex is prone to chipping on metal, woodwork or anything that will get any type of abuse.

scuff sand the poles first. no need for primer.

DON'T use cheap paint. Can you paint latex over oil based enamel?
No...you have to prime it with something like Kilz. Your paint store/department can advise
It will not chip, it just will not stick.

I would get a good oil based interior flat primer and paint the enamel over, then put on a sealer coat, then the top coat of latex. Talk to your paint store.
oil base more durable

Be Blessed!
It won't chip, it will peel off. Make sure to use Kilz or a good primer before u paint. Just finished doing all my doors today. They were peeling because primer wasnt used. Well worth the extra time to prime!!
she's right! use a good primer first. but even more important, use a good paint like dunn edwards. they can recomend a strong latex paint for steele applications.
