Can you paint with an enamel paint w/out sanding a surface first?

It's an old wooden twin bed w/lots of twists %26amp; grooves, which will take a long time to sand. Can you paint with an enamel paint w/out sanding a surface first?
Yes, just make sure you clean the surface well, rinse off the soap residue (paint will peel if residue left on it). Get Welbond Glue and usually has the instructions to make a primer coat (I thinks its 1part glue and 5 parts water....definately cheaper than primer and works well). Use Varathane Liquid Plastic Enamel. Very tough and durable paint. Comes in a variety of colors. Or Melamine paints, tintable form to suit to your taste in color.

You might want to wash the bed down with soap %26amp; water, then dry thoroughly to remove any oils or residues. You could then apply a primer if the bed is stained with a dark stain, if not, you should be able to apply the enamel directly to the wood without sanding. Of course, you should smooth out any obvious rough patches if necessary. Good luck!
If it is a finished surface the enamel will not adhere well without sanding first. For the best finish, sand, prime, then put on the enamel paint.
