How do u tell if something is painted with enamel paint or latex?

I have this old dresser and need to paint it but it is already painted...just don't know what type of paint it is.How do u tell if something is painted with enamel paint or latex?
the most reliable way is to use a rag to rub a small amount of a substance that disolves latex products but does not dissolve solvent based ones and see if a little starts to come off.

If its latex, you'll see a little of the dresser color on the rag.

If not, the surface will get buffed/polished only.

Some products that will do this are: Goof off, laquer thinnner, Krud kutter, oops. nail polish remover (I think) is in the same category - yeah, 'cause nail polish is an acrylic - yeah, that will do it too.

There are other ways- theyre ';harder to read the results';;

1) drag your nails on the surface. If its very hard and slick theres a good chance its oil - but you need to know what your comparing it to.
