I am painting my house (outside) and am not sure whether to use acrylic or enamel paint.?

I live in a pretty dry warm place and am not sure if either will provide a better result. Any help would be much appreciated.I am painting my house (outside) and am not sure whether to use acrylic or enamel paint.?
Enamel means a paint that dries with a hard surface. It can be oil, latex, or hybrid paint. Many paints with a high acrylic content are referred to as enamels. Also, some acrylic paints are oil based. Point being, acrylic and enamel can refer to the exact same paint.

The type of paint you use depends more upon what is already on your house and what kind of condition it is in than anything. If your house has been painted within the last 10 years or so and the paint is in good condition (no peeling or cracking) you should be able to use any quality paint and get a good result. If it has been painted more that 2 years or so, any gloss should be worn sufficiently that you should not need to sand, just clean thoroughly and apply your new paint. Cleaning would involve washing with TSP, 2 - 4 tablespoons per gallon, apply with a soft brush, scrub a bit and rinse well. Any good brand ';house and trim'; paint should be fine, latex is much easier to work with. It probably will not say enamel on it, as a harder finish is not flexible enough to move with the expansion and contraction of large wood surfaces. Enamels are OK for smaller wood surfaces such as trim. Make sure what you use on the field of the house says ';house'; paint.

If the existing paint is in good condition but is older than 10 years, it becomes important if it is latex or oil. If it is chalking you should use oil paint, if it is not latex should be fine. Clean as above and go for it.

If your paint is peeling or cracking, it needs to come off before you paint again. Down to bare wood. Not necessarily an easy job, but you will be wasting your time and paint to paint over peeling or cracking paint. Remove the old paint, prime with a good oil primer, dry for a couple of days and topcoat with a good latex.I am painting my house (outside) and am not sure whether to use acrylic or enamel paint.?
An excellent exterior paint is Zinsser Perma White (tintable) its self priming, mold %26amp; mildew resistent. I used it after powerwashing my old aluminum siding w/out primer %26amp; looks like a factory finish. It puts big name brands like B Moore,S Williams to shame %26amp; retails about $25.00 per gallon.
With all the new enviornmental laws nowdays, even the acrylics are getting pretty great. It would be alot less hassle too. Behr is one of the best brands out there. There are also additives you can get that you add to the paint as you go that help with insulation, and low VOC (chemicals/small) will be good too. That should be listed on the cans. As to what is on there now- I've worked in the bldg/design industry for years and I've never seen anything other than waterbased going up on homes. It would be my guess thats what you have on there. You could get a qt and check a small area for adhesion etc.....
hello painter here! is the house already painted? do you know what it's been painted with? if it has oil (enamel) on it you can go ahead and use oil. it will last longer than latex, but much messier and drying time is longer. if you have latex on your house you'll have to stick to it. oil cannot go on latex. if you can't tell what it's been painted with , try to bring a piece to your local paint store and they may be able to tell you. if you can't, go with latex, better safe than sorry. another factor that will determine longevity is quality of paint. do your self a favor and do not skimp on paint. you'll be painting it again to soon. my personal favorite brand is Benjamin Moore.

good luck and wear sunblock!;)

whatever your house is made of go to sears they make the best house paint .i have used many times , get (weather beater ultra)
whats on the outside of your house?? stucco, siding, shingles??
living in the warm climate area you are going to want to use 100% acrylic base paint, and or titanium base paint either or. the acrylic exterior paint has a water resistant and weather resistant level of contents in it, and is used for exterior, if you choose to use it inside get the interior acrylic it helps with stains. the enamel is an oil based paint and is used to paint cabinets, stair rails and doors, ect... it leaves a hard egg shell finish on the project. the acrylic is all water based material and is easily able for clean up, vs the enamel you have to use paint thinner or diesal for clean up. for thinning purposes add a little bit of water to the acrylic paint and then be sure to stir it well until its the texture you are comfortable to use, same thing with the enamel but add paint thinner to thin. if you have anymore questions just e-mail me at effighter343@yahoo.com... im a painter when im not at my full time job.
