My kitchen cabinets have high gloss white enamel paint on them. Want to distress them-how should I do it?

Will keep them white. My kitchen cabinets have high gloss white enamel paint on them. Want to distress them-how should I do it?
Do you just want to sand away on the edges or do you want to add a glaze that would still allow the light color to show through?

If you sand away on the edges, use a small handheld sander, preferably a palm sander loaded with fine grit paper; you'll have better control. Keep the sander on just the edges because if you hit the high gloss paint but don't remove it thoroughly, the scratches will show.

If you want to add a glaze over the top of the white paint, you'll need to lightly sand the gloss paint for good adhesion. Sand in the direction of what would be the grain of the wood (even if the cabinets aren't wood). Really distress the wood by striking it with chains or tools of some sort. Add a light transparent glaze, then gently wipe it off, leaving glaze in any crevices and dents and distressed areas.
