Car question: What is the difference between enamel and lacquer paint? What type of paint do new cars have?

all new cars have base coat--clear coat paint,,everyone knows that,,as to your question,,the difference is lacquer is a very hard paint to use,,it has not been used on automobiles for a long time,,enamel,,is a very simple paint,,it is a one step paint,you spray it,,and your done,,you get the shine with the paint ,,as for lacquer you have to buff it out,,and really put a lot of work in to it,,but it is a pretty paint when done right,,most of the older cars had lacquer on them,,but now every manufacturer uses base -clear,,because it is very durable,,and looks fantastic for years,,if taken care of,,i restore cars for a living,,so i paint a lot,,my paint of choice is base -clear,,i also like poly urethane,,it is a very tough paint,,but also hard to work,if not done right,,i hope this help,s,,painting is a art,,and when done right even an old junk car can be made to look like new again,,i hope this answer,s your question.Car question: What is the difference between enamel and lacquer paint? your cobalt has base clear on it,,it,s a very good paint,,as for the difference between enamel,and poly,,enamel does not have as hard of a finish on it as polyurethane does,,when fully cured poluyrethane ha a realhard finish,,and can battle the weather a lot better than plain old enamel.

most cars have polyurethene or enamal paint on them. It is hard to get a lacquer to hold a shine.
Most new cars use acrylic enamel. It's easier to sand/buff, and less toxic.


Custom paints are usually lacquer. Better/brigher colors, but very toxic.
